Day 98 (a little over 3 Months since the accident)

(Home 37 Days)

Joshua & Macie at Elza & James' Wedding

I know it has been a while since I have updated this site, but a week after Joshua came home we (Joshua and me) came to the agreement that the next post to this website would be written by him. I have been hounding him for one ever since! :) We should have made you all aware of this, but to be honest we did not think it would take us this long to get you an update. Going forward there will be less updates on the site in order to give Joshua a little privacy during his continued healing process. Any major changes in Joshua’s health will be posted, so if there no posts you can be confident that Joshua is still on the long road to recovery.

The family is very thankful for the continued moral support that has been given to Joshua and the entire family during this period.

Thanks,
Bobby

So with out further adieu here is Joshua’s Message for March 5th, 2005:

First off I would like to give you an update on how I’m doing. Ever since I left Fresno I have been keeping up with my therapy and also have enrolled in a Adult School class. The Physical and Occupational therapy is helping me with my more detailed skills and strength on my left side ( left arm and leg.) The Adult school class was recommended by my Speech Therapist at Children’s Hospital, it is to help my brain heal. The Class is also to get me ready to re-enroll in college. I’m hoping to be ready to go back next semester, and am doing my best to prepare myself. I will continue meeting with my Physical and Occupational for at least another month. In a few weeks I will be returning to Children’s hospital for some minor surgery to remove the G-Tube that was placed in my stomach back in December.

Second I would like to apologize for the delay in providing an update to this site. I know many people have come here to checkup on me and leave me messages. I appreciate all the prayers and blessing that you have all given me. I don’t think I would have made it this far without them. I have read every guestbook entry at least twice, and I would like to thank each of you for those messages of encouragement.

Third I would like to send special thanks to all the people who helped me at Children’s hospital and Antelope Valley hospital. Without the dedicated care of each person who helped me I could not have walked out of the hospital and be home today.

Lastly, I hope to continue posting to this web site from time to time to let people know how I’m doing! I will continue to check my Guestbook.

Thank you and God bless you all.
Joshua

Days 63 & 64 – First weekend at home.

Saturday –

  • Joshua’s first day of therapy at home. Jennifer and Dad started working with him and Tia Mary and Cousin David (they live next door) walked over to join in. David cut Josh no slack, he made sure Joshua did his exercise, and correctly. Joshua has nicknamed him “Sergeant Drill.” Good thing tomorrow is Sunday, Joshua’s day off from therapy.
  • Joshua spent much of the evening visiting with the family and on the internet…

Sunday –

  • Joshua attend mass at St. Aloysius, afterwards he got a chance to thank Father Rick. Father Rick organized a Rosary for Joshua on the Monday after the accident. Joshua is thankful to all of those who have/are praying for him.
  • Today the family celebrated Blake’s birthday which was actually a few days earlier, Mom made lunch and invited the family over. Joshua had a good time visiting with the family and took his time eating. He seems to be convinced that due to his injuries he never feels full… Joshua I will have to do some research on that one :) -- It is good to be home.

Day 62 - Joshua comes home.

On Friday during Joshua’s therapy sessions Mom was there for training again. Today was a little different it was Joshua’s last day of therapy at Children’s Hospital Central California. Joshua’s Doctors and therapist had decided that Joshua was ready to leave the hospital for good. After Joshua’s last session he said his Goodbyes packed up his room, got in the car, and headed home.
  • Joshua had been at the Children’s hospital since December 25th, a little over a month. There he got great care and the therapy that has helped him soo much. Although Joshua liked the hospital very much and all the kind people he meet there he was ready to go home. He was tired of being stuck in that hospital room. It was all worth it, Joshua can swallow and eat, he can walk, he speaking well, his brain is on the right track, and his left arm and shoulder are showing some progress. When Joshua arrived at Children’s Hospital those were all things Joshua could not do. From the Family of Joshua we have only the greatest of gratitude and appreciation for all of those at Children Hospital who help Joshua and us through this period of recovery and rehabilitation. Thank You and God Bless.

Coming Home… this is a huge step, a major milestone in the recovery process. This step can often be the hardest part of recovery too, Joshua will have to follow his doctors and therapist directions fully to achieve the full potential of his recovery. He will have to continue his daily routine of therapy, but now on his own with the help of the family not a team of therapists forcing him. He will also have to make the life changes that come with a serious head injury:

  • Joshua can not partake in high risk physical activities for the next few years, like running, biking, wrestling, physical sports, yes even soccer, I know that one specifically will be hard for you Joshua. The problem is that any blow to the head even a mild one can potentially cause a relapse or even cause serious damage to the brain. He needs to be extra careful with his left side, his left leg is a bit weaker, and his right arm and hand are not at the point where Joshua can use them to break a fall or protect his head.
  • Joshua will also have to make the lifestyle choices that come with his injures; he will never be able to drink alcohol, not even a single glass. The doctors have told him that this is not a choice but fact, alcohol has a detrimental effect on a brain that has suffered a traumatic injury. Not to mention the effects it has on those who have not had brain trauma are more pronounced for some one with a brain injury: poor judgment, loss of coordination, dulled senses, and slowness in reactions.
  • The doctors also recommended that Joshua start going to school soon, if even just electives. School work will help to stimulate the brain and force it to repair itself. Complex ideas, reasoning skills, memory, and attention span are all subjects that Joshua has been addressing in therapy so far and will need to continue to work on. “The brain is like a muscle - if you don't give it regular workouts, its functions will decline.” Advice we could all probably use!
  • Joshua will also continuing attending weekly therapy sessions at a local rehabilitation center, there he will attend short sessions with a professional therapist. These sessions will be shorter and less frequent in comparison with previous therapist lead sessions. The sessions will be more concise and focused with the expectation that Joshua will use what he learns during the sessions in his workouts at home.

Joshua with the determination you have shown over the last month+, all these things should be a piece of cake, and well alright some days may be like eating grapefruit. Regardless, I’m confident you can do it and I know I’m not the only one. Your whole family and a lot of good people are standing behind you, I know you won't fall down but if you need help we are there for you.

For those of you who wish to visit Joshua, please call ahead. Joshua still has a full schedule to keep of the therapy, appointments, and can get very tired during the course of the day . Your understanding is greatly appreciated. I’m sure he will be happy to see you.

Day 61

60 days since Joshua’s accident, an amazing recovery so far, we are truly thankful.
  • Joshua had another day of therapy today. Mom and Dad had some training sessions today also with the Physical therapist and Speech Therapist. They learned exercises techniques and brain exercises that Joshua will need to do everyday, for the time being he will need to keep a full schedule of therapy, even when he returns home.
  • Today Joshua unveiled the “secret project” he finished back on “Day 51” in ocupational therapy. It was a small heart shaped topiary (a topiary is planter with chicken wire on top to shape that a plant grows inside, in this case it is shaped like a heart.) Joshua’s project was gift for Mom, and he gave it to her today.

Wednesday, January 26, 2005

Days 59, 60

  • Today and yesterday Joshua had his full schedule of therapy. The occupation therapist showed Joshua how some more exercises to do on his left arm, he still has lots of work to do to keep improving that arm. Joshua is happy to hear that he has improving enough that he will soon be able to go home, and start the next step of rehabilitation. Tomorrow Dad and Mom will be attending a training session with Joshua’s therapy team. It will cover the care, exercises, and the regimen Joshua will need to follow when he returns home.

Monday, January 24, 2005

Day 58

  • Today was another full day of therapy for Joshua. Weather permitted again today so Joshua had his physical therapy outside. Joshua’s doctors told him he soon will be ready to start the out-patient step in his therapy soon. Mom and Dad have been told to start preparing for Joshua’s home coming; special provisions will need to be made when Joshua comes home. Joshua will still need to be monitored 24 hours a day until the Doctors feel comfortable with Joshua’s progress. Although Joshua will no longer be in the hospital everyday he will still be expected to continue doing his exercises daily and keep up his schedule.
  • This will be then next major step on the road to recovery for Joshua, but it can be the hardest and longest. Joshua will have to force himself to do all the exercises and activities the doctors prescribe to him, but with no more team of therapist forcing Joshua to work hard all day long, like in the hospital. When he beings out-patient Joshua will meet with the therapists less frequently and they will expect Joshua to work through out the day at home. Joshua you have come so far since the accident, keep your head up and the good work, exercise hard and stay positive in the end it will have all paid off. You have got the momentum moving in the right direction.

Days 55, 56, & 57

Friday and Saturday –

  • On Friday and Saturday Joshua had his therapy sessions, all went well. No nights-out those days since he had hit two night limit. On Saturday we watched the Blue Streak, and had some good laughs.

Sunday –

  • Sunday was Joshua’s day out of the hospital for the week. This the 4th weekend Joshua has been able to leave the hospital for more than a few hours. We attended mass, and Joshua is doing much better at walking, again no wheelchair today. Joshua gets very tired when he walks around, but his stamina seemed to improve over last weekend. We had a nice lunch at a nearby restaurant. We hung around the Fresno area going to a few stores and spending a lot of time walking. Joshua was intent on finding a stationary cycle to exercise and strengthen his legs when he can go home. He is going to check with his Physical Therapist on weather or not that is a good idea. Joshua, regardless if it turns out to be a good idea or not is good to see you think about ways to improve yourself! Stay positive little bro and work on those puzzles and your reading, it will help get your brain on track. Joshua was able to stay out longer today, when he got tired he took a short breather and sat down for a few minutes. Seems sitting down a little here and there to rest pays off.

Thursday, January 20, 2005

Day 54

  • Joshua had his regular therapy sessions today, all went well. He said he is getting tired of being stuck in his room all day, but is grateful for the improvements, that the rehabilitation is responsible for. Mom, Jennifer, and Bernadette took Joshua out for dinner today, that’s dinner out two nights in a row! Joshua sounds like your getting spoiled… ;) Well that’s the last time this week, only can leaving in the evenings two nights a week.

Wednesday, January 19, 2005

Day 53

  • Joshua did well today in his therapy sessions. Another day of hard work! It is paying off; he is doing much better each day.
  • In the evening Jennifer took Joshua out of the hospital for a few hours. Joshua said he had a good time with Jennifer at the banquet for her soccer team.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

Day 52

  • Joshua had a long night last night, his new arm brace made his arm hurt. It took him quite a while to fall asleep, he said last time he checked the clock it was after 1AM. His occupation therapist plans to get him a different arm brace that may be more comfortable.
  • Josh had his regular therapy sessions today; he had a physical therapy session outside and one in the hospital gym. In recreational therapy Joshua started another project, building a car out of Lego’s. He is staying busy, but was able to catch up on his sleep in the late afternoon with a long nap. Joshua also said he finished his “secret” project in occupational therapy today…hum

Monday, January 17, 2005

Day 51

  • Joshua had his physical therapy outside today. Joshua also had sessions with the occupational therapist and speech therapist today. Joshua got a replacement brace that stretches his left arm, this one basically keeps his arm strait. Today being Mom’s birthday she joined Joshua in the evening to have dinner at the hospital. Joshua has been signing happy birthday a lot this month :)

Sunday, January 16, 2005

Day 50

Sunday, Joshua’s got to leave the hospital for a little while…

  • Jennifer helped Joshua shave this morning and put on his contacts. Joshua and Jennifer have gotten very good at putting on Joshua’s contacts. We attended mass at Holy Spirit Church, and this time Joshua did not bring his wheel chair. With a little help he did a lot of walking today. At mass Joshua did his best to participate; standing, seating, kneeling, etc. It was hard work but he made it through the whole mass.
  • After mass we got a call from Cousin Bernadette, today was her birthday and she was hoping that she could have lunch with Joshua. After a little negotiating on a location, the Elephant Bar was picked. It was going to be a little while before Bernadette and her family would get to Fresno, and Joshua needed a few things so we drove over to Target. Joshua walked around the store, with us at his side of course. We made a few purchases and headed over to lunch. It was another big lunch for everyone, but Joshua made sure he had room for some dessert. He has put on some pounds, since last weekend :)

Cousin Bernadette, Tia Mary, Joshua, and Tio Victor - Happy B-Day

  • Joshua had initially wanted to go see a movie, Meet the Fockers, but after all the walking around today Joshua was pretty tired, so we headed over to Jennifer’s to rest for a while. We hung out for several hours and Joshua said he was ready to hit the sack, so Jennifer took him back to the hospital.
  • In all it was another good day for Joshua, he is doing much better with his walking, and everyday he is exercising his left hand and arm. He says that each day he is improving and he looks forward to the day when he can go home. He is happy to be having less head aches too; it has been a few days since he has had a really bad one. Hopefully his blood pressure will stay normal tonight, after his last excursion it took a few hours for his blood pressure to normalize. The staff at Children’s Hospital is doing a great job of monitor Joshua’s health.

Saturday, January 15, 2005

Day 49

  • Joshua had another busy Saturday of therapy. In the afternoon we brought in an Adam Sandler movie for Joshua to watch, Joshua is a huge Sandler fan. 50 First Dates is a sweet movie about a girl who loses her short memory, it was a good watch, it kind of hit home for all of us. :) Joshua hit the sack a little bit earlier than usual since he didn’t get a chance to have a nap, and to be rested for a day out tomorrow.

Friday, January 14, 2005

Day 48

  • Another positive day of therapy for Joshua. Joshua had his physical therapy outside which is always a plus. Joshua said he has also started another project, but this time during his occupational therapy session but it is "top secret." We will have to wait to find out what it is working on now...
  • Big sister Jennifer took Joshua out for dinner tonight, they had little Panda Express. Joshua also got the chance to stop by her near by home, and check it out. Then Joshua and Jennfer headed back to the hospital, beacuse tomorrow there is more therapy in the morning!

Thursday, January 13, 2005

Day 47

  • Joshua has full day of therapy today, he even needed a little nap in the late afternoon. Joshua said he did realy bad on a memory exercise he did during one of his sessions, he was a bit fustrated. Joshua it takes time and practice, each day will be an improvement over the previous day!
  • Some of Joshua’s friends came by in the evening to play a couple of rounds of cards.

Wednesday, January 12, 2005

Day 46

  • Joshua worked with his speech therapist, occupational therapist, recreational therapist, and physical therapist today. He is staying busy and getting stronger. His Doctor even gave him permission to leave the hospital for dinner tonight. Mom, Jennifer, Joseph & Janet, Blake, and Joshua went to the near by Chevys for some "Fresh Mex". It gave Joshua another chance to enjoy a nice dinner outside the hospital. He has started to grow restless being stuck in his hospital room most of the time, even with his busy therapy schedule.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Day 45

  • Joshua had his regular therapy sessions today, which included recreational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. The weather had improved today so Joshua had his physical therapy outside.
  • Joshua’s treatment has included for some time sessions of recreational therapy. A recreational therapist uses a variety of techniques, including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and outings to treat and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their patience. These techniques help Joshua to reduce stress, and anxiety; recover motor functioning and reasoning abilities; and build confidence. Today Joshua finished building a small wooden car that he had been working on during recent sessions with the Recreational Therapist. I asked Joshua what kind of car it was and he replied, “it looks like a Model T.” Joshua, I can't wait to check it out!
  • Joshua was in good spirits and felt pretty good today; he even got to kick a bouncing ball back and fourth during one of his therapy sessions. Joshua has gotten a good understanding of how serious his injuries were. Today Joshua told some visiting friends that, “God gave me a second chance." We are all so greatful!

UPDATE 1/16/05: We got to check out the project Joshua had finished.

Monday, January 10, 2005

Day 44

  • Joshua had session with the physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist today. Josh also met with one of the doctors to work on pattern recognition, this helps with assessing the brain and stimulating it. Joshua said he felt pretty good with how he did; he found several of the different patterns. Pretty good for a Monday, after long weekend :)
  • Joshua reminded me that he needs to record a new audio clip for his web site. Joshua said, "in the other recording I sound weird.” Joshua was talking about the recording that was posted on Day 25. Joshua, I will get right on that ;)

Sunday, January 09, 2005

Day 43 - First visit home.

Joshua got to leave the hospital today for a few hours…and visit home

  • The family went to the hospital in the morning to get Joshua ready and get him checked out of the hospital. He even had a chance to put on his contact for the first time since the accident. Mom and Joshua couldn’t get them in, but they tried hard.

Joshua with Sister Jennifer and Sister-in-law Andreea at lunch.

  • We drove to the nearby Catholic Church, Holy Spirit Church and attended a mass. It is a beautiful church with very nice music throughout the mass. Joshua was able to walk down to take communion, with the helpful hand of Blake at his side.

Joshua and little Brother Blake waiting for a table at lunch.

  • Afterwards we went to a neighborhood Chili’s for lunch. Joshua was excited about eating outside the hospital. In fact he was so excited he took a big spoon full of Chicken Enchilada soup before it could cool, ouch hot! Afterwards Andreea and I headed back to Santa Clara but Joshua and the rest of the family headed down to Tulare to visit Home.

Joshua and Dad.

  • Joshua was a little anxious on the ride home; it is a little over an hour drive and Joshua hasn’t had to sit in a car that long in quite a while. When they pulled in Grandpa came out to see him, it was the first time he had gotten a chance to see Joshua since the accident, he was very happy to see Josh. Joshua also got to see Grandma again.
  • When Joshua got in the house he was able to go see his room, it had a fresh paint job thanks to Bernadette, Tia Mary and Betty. Later he even was able to get online; he checked out new posts in his guestbook and Instant Messaged some friends and family that were online. He types pretty well with the right hand; it will be a while before he can also type with his left, lots of rehabilitation and exercise. Later he sat down for a dinner of crab; Tio Victor hooked him up again.
  • Joshua tried to put on his contacts again, and this time it was a real team effort. Everyone was involved; Jennifer, Joseph, and I heard even David helped hold his eye open. With all the help this time Joshua was able to get his contacts in. Josh sounds like a bunch of fun :)
  • Joshua sat on the couch much of the rest of the evening talking. He also played with Mimosa (Joseph and Janet’s dog) and Vega (Jennifer's puppy.) Later Jennifer took Joshua back to the Hospital to start his therapy regimen again tomorrow.

Saturday, January 08, 2005

Day 42

  • Joshua had his therapy sessions today, Joshua was very tired afterwards. We showed up a little after his last session with a movie to watch; Napoleon Dynamite, which was soooo funny that Joshua feel asleep twice while watching. :) Later we played a game of chess. Joshua was excited about getting to leave tomorrow for a little while, so we tucked him in early.

Friday, January 07, 2005

Day 41 - 9:55PM

  • Today was another pretty good day for Joshua. It was raining so no outside physical therapy today, but he did have his session indoors. Tomorrow more of the same, he is working six days a week. No more Saturdays off, now that the holidays have passed.
  • On Sunday, Joshua's free day the doctors have recommend that he go home and see the house. This is in hopes that it will jog more memories, then the doctors will help Joshua piece back what he has forgotten.
  • He is very excited about getting to see Joseph and Janet's little dog Mimosa. :)

Thursday, January 06, 2005

Day 40 - 10:09PM

  • Joshua had his physical therapist session outside again today. Joshua also had his regular sessions with the speech therapist and occupational therapist. Joshua and the family had a meeting with the panel of Therapists and Doctors that have been helping him at Children's Hospital. They gave Joshua and the family an update on Joshua's progress and what he needs to know about his injuries. The healing process will be long and there are no quick and easy answers, but Joshua is on the right path. :)
  • Today Joshua also learned during the accident that his heart was bruised, the doctors have been monitoring it since day one, and hope that that to will heal with time. Must be because it is so big right Josh? ;)

Wednesday, January 05, 2005

Day 39 - 10:15PM

  • Joshua worked with the speech therapist, occupational therapist, and physical therapist. The speech therapist has been working with Joshua on his memory. Today the physical therapist took him outside for his workout sessions. Joshua said he could tell that his balance was improving and that his left leg is getting stronger.

Tuesday, January 04, 2005

Day 38 - 11:25PM

  • Joshua had his therapy sessions today, each day he is working very hard to improve.
  • Joshua has been getting daily printouts of the guestbook messages. He enjoys reading the words of encouragement.
  • Joshua is now asking more questions of the doctors and nurses, he want to understand more about his injuries. Joshua wants to know what the short and long-term effects of brain injuries are. He wants to know what he can do to improve his condition and diminish the effects of the injuries. Joshua we are so proud of your positive outlook and the hard work you are doing to improve yourself. I have found your steadfast courage inspiring, little bro. I guess your being sooo stubborn is starting to really pay off!

Monday, January 03, 2005

Day 37 - 10:55PM

  • Joshua had a good day today. He had his regular sessions of speech, physical, and occupational therapies. He was really tired after his physical therapy in the afternoon, he said he got a good workout. Grandma and some of the family made a surprise visit to Joshua in the afternoon.
  • The brace that keeps Joshua's left elbow extended got upgraded today. It now keeps his elbow extended to about 140 degrees (the other was about 110 degrees.)

Sunday, January 02, 2005

Day 36 - 10:25PM

  • Since Joshua’s outing was cut short yesterday due to his headache, the doctor ok-ed another short outing today. Thanks Doc. This time though they had given Joshua some medication for headaches before we left. Mom and Dad had hoped to take Joshua to a nearby Mass, but there was no way we could make it in time, it takes a while to get him signed out etc. Hopefully next Sunday. We piled into Dad and Mom’s car and drove to a near by mall. With Joshua in his wheel chair we cruised through the mall and some of it stores. He said it was good to be out of the hospital if even just for a little while. Jennifer joined us at mall and we later ate lunch near by.
  • While we waited to be seated to eat, I got a call from Joshua’s cousin. He said that they where at the hospital and Joshua was nowhere to be found? I told him what happen; that the doctor had ok-ed today’s outing. So they came and joined Joshua for lunch. Today went much better, Joshua said his head did not hurt much, but it was a little itchy from wearing the beanie. :)

  • Joshua is now wearing three different braces (each seem to be helping him to make progress in mobility):
  • 1) keeps his left hand open and his fingers extended
  • 2) another that keeps his left elbow at about 110 degrees extended (over time the will keep extending it until his arm is completely strait.)
  • 3) and yet another on his left leg which keeps him from buckling his left knee or damaging it.
  • The PEG tube which is no longer used to feed Joshua will need to stay in for some time. In order for it to heal up properly it will be a while before it can be removed.
  • Joshua is weighted daily, and each day he is put on some more weight.

Saturday, January 01, 2005

Day 35 - 11:56PM

Happy New Year!
  • Today is New Years Day, and Joshua's first chance to get out of the hospital for a short outing. We got him all dressed up, and Jennifer got him a beanie (what my Canadian friends call a "tuke") to keep his head warm. All of Joshua's siblings showed up for the outing. After some work we managed to make it out of the hospital parking lot... Joshua's assigned wheel chair was not of the folding type, so there was no way to fit it in any of our cars, and since it was a holiday finding a folding wheel chair to barrow in the hospital was a bit of a task. Luckily one of the nurses was able to find a wheel chair that was foldable. Saved the day!
  • As we where leaving Joshua was complaining of a bit of a headache, he gets them pretty much daily, common with a head injury. First thing he wanted to do was eat some Chinese food, but most of the places near the hospital where closed, so we settled on the Elephant Bar. It was near by and has a pretty good selection of food and a upbeat atmosphere. Joshua was not impressed with the Asian dish he selected; he said it was not even close to "authentic Chinese." (I'm not sure where he would have tasted authentic Chinese food before, but I won't argue, next time he comes to visit us in the bay area we will need to take him to Chinatown to get some of the real stuff.) He ate a good part of the dish and all of his dessert. His headache had gotten progressively worst, by the time he was done with lunch it was bothering him really bad. He needed some Ibuprofen so we took him back to the hospital. They gave him something for the headache and he also took a few hour nap. When he woke up he felt much better.
  • When he woke up he polished off the entire dinner that had been brought to his room earlier. We played a few rounds of the doctor recommended game of memory, and some more of the family came by to visit.
  • While we where at lunch Joshua's friend Shane stopped by the restaurant, he had just finished his shift at work near by. Here is a picture of Joshua and Shane sitting at the table.

Day 34 - 2:56PM

New Years Eve.

  • Joshua got some good news today. We should be able to take him out of the hospital tomorrow for a few hours. First time he has been outside in over a month! The doctor said he expect that Joshua will be staying at Children's Hospital for another 4 -6 weeks, then he will start outpatient treatment. During outpatient treatment he will be staying at home but need to visit the Rehabilitation center several times a week for ongoing therapy.

UPDATE 1/3/05 10:33PM : New Years Eve with Joshua, we all watched the ball drop live in New York's Time Square at 9:00PM (PST) on CNN from his hospital room. Joshua was exhausted from his day of therapy and the anticipation of leaving the hospital for a few hour tomorrow. By 10:30PM Joshua was sleeping like a baby.

Thursday, December 30, 2004

Day 33 - 10:38PM

  • Joshua had another full day of therapy today. Things are going well. He will likely be getting a little break for the "New Years" weekend.

Wednesday, December 29, 2004

Day 32 - 9:55PM

  • Joshua had a good day today. He had his daily therapy sessions and all went pretty well. His speech seems to be getting better everyday. Josh keep up the good work!
  • Joshua is drinking regular liquids now. He needs to drink un-thicken liquids through a straw, he even got some Gatorade today!
  • The occupational therapy has been helping Joshua in his left hand, he is able to move each figure on his hand a little bit. With each passing day he gains a little more mobility. He has also been fitted for a new brace for his left arm to keep his elbow extended.

*Joshua's maternal Great-Uncle "Tio Manuel Nascimento" passed away yesterday evening at his home in Turlock, after an ongoing battle with cancer. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, children, and the entire family. He was a great husband, father, brother, and man whose warm spirit and comforting smile will be surely missed.

One Month Since the Accident

Joshua has recovered so much over the last 31 days. His improvement has been so awesome that he has even astonished some of the doctors. Now at the Children’s Hospital Rehabilitation Center he is getting the type of care that will help him get back on his feet. It is the kind of care that diminishes the long term effects of impairments cause by the accident. Joshua is also learning what it means to have had a brain injury and its lifetime effects. We are all learning, our parents attended a support group for victims of brain injuries and their families this week. We are all in such high spirits and thankful for Joshua’s continued improvements. God bless.

Tuesday, December 28, 2004

Day 31 - 5:07PM

  • Joshua felt much better when he woke up this morning. He said "Yesterday's headache made me feel like I was dying again, but I feel better now." Feeling much better today Joshua had two sessions with each with the physical therapist and the occupational therapist. He walked around the room several times with the help of the physical therapist. They also did exercises to strengthen his left leg and balance. The occupational therapist stretched his left arm and showed Joshua several exercises for him to do during the day to help regain mobility in that arm.
  • In his sessions with the speech therapist Joshua read several book passages, and later was asked questions about what he read. He told me "I got most of them right." Keep working Joshua we know you can do it.
  • I was talking to Joshua a few minutes ago, and his dinner had just got delivered. He said he had to go it was some "yummy spaghetti and meat sauce." He has got a strong appetite!

Update 7:10PM, I just spoke with Joshua and the spaghetti was not as yummy as he initially thought. So the nurse was nice enough to get it replaced with some chicken strips. He said those where much better. Joshua, guess "strong appetite" doesn't mean you'll eat anything. :)

Day 30 - 8:20PM

  • Joshua had a good morning, he worked with the occupational therapist, speech therapist, and physical therapist. The physical therapist has recommend Joshua start using a brace on his left leg. He will likely be fitted for one in the next couple of days.
  • In the afternoon Joshua was woken from a nap for his afternoon round of physical therapy. He was very disoriented, confused, and complained of a headache. The doctor was called in to see Joshua. The doctor prescribed some medication and requested no more visitors. Mom was asked to turn down all the lights and try to get him to rest. Tomorrow the doctors may take a new CAT Scan of Joshua's head. Sleep well Joshua, and get your rest.

Guestbook Entries

I printed out all of your messages to Joshua before the Christmas Holiday and put them in a binder for him. He has spent much time reading them, and appreciated and enjoy them. In fact once he starts reading the messages you can't get him to put the binder down. The many kind messages of encouragement, hope, and prayers have been special to him. Every time I talk to him he asks me if they are new ones. Once he can leave isolation he will access to computers in the hospital recreation rooms. Note: I have added some "features" to the guestbook to stop SPAM programs that try to post advertisements on internet guestbooks.

Day 29 - 9:50PM

  • Joshua had an enjoyable Sunday, he spent most of the day with the family. He is still on his weekend furlough from the Therapists. Here is a shot with Joshua and his siblings, nice costumes eh?

  • He is still closely monitored by his doctors and his vital signs are checked several times a day. The last several days they have been good. Joshua put on 10lbs since he was first weighted when he was admitted at Children's Hospital. He is really enjoying the fact that he can eat, you can start to see his face filling back in.
  • Later in the day more of Joshua's family came by for a visit. His uncle Victor brought him his infamous holiday Crab. Joshua chowed down on that and said it was really good... I don't think anyone could pry that Crab away from him. "10 times better than a Six-Dollar Burger" he pronounced to all of us. Here is a fun picture of Joshua enjoying the tasty crab dinner.

  • Joshua will start his day bright and early tomorrow. He will be getting up at 6:00AM for a shower and then the therapy begins...Go Josh!

Day 28 - 11:59PM

Christmas Day.
  • Joshua had a good Christmas Day, eating well and spending time with the family.
  • The Therapists have given him the "weekend off," but starting Monday it will be double-time working on his rehabilitation.

From Joshua, and the rest of our family we wish you a very happy, special, and safe holiday. We can not be more thankful that Joshua is here to spend the holiday with all of us. I true "Christmas Miracle."

Merry Christmas!

Day 27 - 11:51PM

Christmas Eve

  • Joshua was on a roll today, he had us a laughing off our feet. He has been in really good spirits and so have we. He has been our Christmas miracle, each day being better than the day before. He even makes fun of us in our funny isolation requirements (mask, gown, and gloves.)
  • Joshua had his first real breakfast since the accident, he said the “food at this hotel, opps I mean hospital is very good.” Sometimes he confuses the word “hotel” and “hospital”, now he has got us all doing the same thing. :)
  • Santa Clause came by to hospital today to visit all the children. Although he couldn’t come in to Joshua’s room (isolation) he gave Joshua a wave through the window and dropped off a few gifts.
  • Joshua has definitely got his appetite back he ate all his dinner, and in a few hours he was asking for more. Still not too happy with the thickened juices but he is getting used to it.
  • Joshua got assigned homework today; they gave him a binder with exercises for him to do which will help him with memory and attention span. He also worked with the Physical Therapist today. He has a new brace to use on his left arm to keep his hand open. He played a little trick on Therapist and us, ha ha ha Josh.
  • Since it was Christmas Eve we were allowed to stay in his room until late, we left after midnight. He was ready to sleep after being up all day. I did how ever get to snap the picture below with Joshua giving you all a thumbs up for your holiday.

Day 26 - 11:31PM

End of First Day at Children's Hospital
  • Well Joshua got settled into his new home today. He has a new bed that he likes to call his “play pen.” It is a big blue bed on the floor that is about 6’ by 6’ with plush sides that go all the way around.
  • He got evaluated by his new Speech Therapist, and he got some exciting news, he can eat solids. So Jennifer ran out and bought him his first “Six Dollar Burger,” he was able to eat about six huge bites and all his CrissCut fries. Joshua exclaimed “That tasted soo good, but I’m full.” He has been ok’ed to eat but can only drink thickened liquids, so in everything he drinks we have to put a powder that makes it very thick, he says it tastes gross. :)
  • When we visit him we are now required to wear a mask, gown and gloves. This is due to him being in isolation. Hopefully soon his PEG tube will be removed since his is now able to start eating normally.

Joshua at his new temporary home...

I just spoke with Joshua a little while ago, he is getting confortable in his new room at Children' Hospital. He had a good and safe ride early this morning.
  • He said he is the "biggest kid around here."
  • I asked how was the ambulance ride "was it cool?", he replyed "it was ok. They wouldn't even stop for 5 minutes at Carl's Jr. to pickup a Six Dollar Burger."

Day 25 - 5:11PM

Hear Joshua talk about today's good news. (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)

Transcript of Joshua's Message: "Hey we are heading to Fresno tomorrow, thanks for your wishes and your prayers. Merry Christmas!"

  • As you might have figured out today Joshua got his "pass," he is heading to Fresno tomorrow 6:00AM via Ambulance transport. He will be entering the Children's Hospital Medical Rehabilitation Center of Central California (AKA Valley Children's Hospital) located just north of Fresno. The goal of the Medical Rehabilitation Center is to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation services for the patient and their families which maximize the abilities of each patient while minimizing the effects of impairments. A major step to recovery...
  • Joshua had another good day today, he was communicating much clearer than even the day before. He is sooo ready to go to the Rehabilitation Clinic.
  • When Joshua is moved to Children's Hospital he will require an isolated room as the infection he has was confirmed today. This infection is not a danger to healthy individuals but could be a risk to other patients who have depressed immune systems like Joshua. The Doctors will be monitoring the infection, and hopefully in time this concern will also pass. Currently we have no details on how visiting will work in this situation but will try and update you after the Christmas holiday.
  • We are all very happy to have Joshua moved to a Rehabilitation Clinic where he can start the next step in his recovery.

Day 24 - 8:44PM

  • Joshua was in good mood today, and he was up for most of visiting hours.
  • He worked with his Therapists again today, and ate more ice chips. Although what he really wanted was Carl's Jr. sandwich and the "biggest cup of Dr. Pepper."
  • Today Joshua was moved to an isolated room, there is some concern that he may have a serious infection. His immune system has been depressed since the accident which has made him more susceptible to infections. We hope to get more information from the doctors in the next few days. Your continued prayers are appreciated.

Days 22 & 23 - 6:32PM

  • Joshua is still making significant strides and progress with the Speech Therapist, Physical Therapist, and Occupational Therapist. His left side still needs a lot of exercise and time.
  • Joshua has been in good spirits the last two days. He is anxious waiting for what he calls his "go home pass." He is reasonably tired of being in a hospital. We are still working hard to get Joshua's claim processed as quickly as possible with Medi-Cal. Jennifer took a short tour today of the facility in Fresno we hope to have Joshua transferred to very soon.

Today:

  • Joshua got another ride (in a wheel chair) around the 4th floor. Mom and Jeanette asked to take him outside, but that required a doctor's ok, not yet.
  • Jeanette is a Respiratory Therapist that had worked with Joshua when he was in the Critical Care Unit. Today she brought Joshua a small Christmas Tree and Angel for the top, to brighten up his room. :)
  • Mom feed him some ice chips today, and I asked him how where they. He sarcastically answered "sooo good." He then followed up with "maybe they can freeze me some 7up or Juice?" His sense of humor seems to be came back the fastest.

Yesterday:

  • Joshua happily got the shave he had asked for. Jennifer shaved off the scruffy thin beard and mustache that had started to grow. He said he looked and felt much better. Jennifer gave him the full Spa treatment as she gave him a manichure and pedicure also.
  • Joshua decided he wanted a notepad yesterday so he could start writing down phone numbers, by the end of the day he had quite a list.

Sorry for no post yesterday.

Day 21 - 10:18PM

Today was another pretty good day for Joshua,

  • Joshua was in good spirits and wanted out of bed first thing this morning when Mom arrived. Mom and Blake talked the nurses into help get him into a wheelchair, then Mom took Joshua on a stroll of the 4th floor where his room is at in the hospital. He was exploring and on a search for "ice water," Joshua has not drank water normally in over 20 days now, his mouth and throat get very dry, so he asks for water often. Until it is safe for him to swallow he is getting all his water and food through the PEG tube, and previously through his NG tube. It's just not the same a drink from a glass :(
  • It is hard work for Joshua to keep his head up when in the chair so after his stroll he was very tired and only stayed awake for a few hours. During is few hour nap it seemed that no one could wake him from a deep slumber.
  • Around 5:45 Joshua woke up and was in a good mood, and chatted until visiting hours where over.

Friday, December 17, 2004

Day 20 - 9:18PM

  • Joshua was less agitated today, in fact he was in pretty good spirits, and each day he is getting stronger. Today his blood pressure and heart rate stayed stable today.
  • Today he said he needed a shave and wanted Mom to get him some boxers to start wearing under his hospital gown.

Thanks to all of you who have given advice on expediting Joshua's Medi-Cal Claim we are exploring all avenues. Since the weekend is now hear we will have to wait until Monday to continue...

Thursday, December 16, 2004

Day 19 - 9:39PM

  • Joshua was very agitated today, he is getting extremely restless, and it is really hard to keep him relaxed. It is important for Joshua to keep calm to avoid stressing his heart and elevating his blood pressure. We believe this is just another phase on the road to recovery.
  • Joshua is currently making progress with the short Therapy sessions he has daily at the hospital. When he‘s transferred to a Rehabilitation Center he will be immersed in Therapy continuously.

Update on Transfer to a Rehabilitation Center: We had hoped to have Joshua transferred to a rehabilitation center by the end of this week, but have come across a few hurdles. Unfortunately Joshua is not currently enrolled in school; he had decided to take the fall semester off, and had recently moved out of our parent’s home. Because of these factors and the fact that he was over eighteen at the time of the accident he is not covered by health insurance. We have applied for Medi-Cal on his behalf and it is currently in what is called “pending status.” Due to the immense cost of Rehabilitation Care the several centers we have talked to are not willing to take Joshua until an approval has been made. Given that Medi-Cal claims can take up to 45 days to get approved, and due to the importance of immediate rehabilitation we are working the phones, faxes, emails, etc. If any of you have previous experience or advice on expediting a Medi-Cal claim please give me a call at home voicemail 408-404-8300(prefered) or send me an email at mailto:bobbym@endevour.com?subject=Re:Joshua.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Update - Day 18 - 9:09PM

  • Joshua's surgery this morning went well.
  • Joshua had sessions today with his Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist, he has contined making progress.
  • He really wants out of bed, and we hope to soon have him in a rehabilitation center.

Update - Day 18 - 9:38AM

  • Joshua is in surgery this morning, he is having a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.) During the procedure a tube is placed in the stomach for enteral feeding (feeding directly through the gastrointestinal tract) to occur. This will be in place until Joshua can start to swallow safely. It also replaces the NG tube (Nasogastric tube) which he has been having a hard time keeping in.

Tuesday, December 14, 2004

Update - Day 17 - 11:38PM

  • Joshua had his swallow capabilities evaluated today, and the Speech Therapist said although he is doing much better it is still not safe for him to being eating and drinking through the mouth yet. This is not what we had hoped as Joshua is continuing to having problems keeping his NG Feeding tube in place. It came out again today during his evaluation process.
  • Joshua worked with both the hospital Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist again today, he is continuing to make progress. He stood up again this morning (with lots of help.) The family has been given additional instructions for exercises to do with Joshua's left leg during the day, and we kept him busy as much as possible today.
  • Today Joshua wanted out of bed really bad today, he was not happy with us at all for keeping him in bed. :( It's ok Joshua we understand :)
  • He has not yet realized that he needs lots of help and rehabilitation before he can start to walk around or keep his balance. We are working as quickly as possible to get him in a Rehab clinic. Looks like there are two in Fresno that are properly equipped to provided the care and training Joshua needs.

the Present

Today while eating at the hospital cafeteria I read a quote on the wall that seemed appropriate to how were all seem to be feeling.

Each day is a gift from God; that's why it's called the Present!
~author unknown

Life is Precious, and 2nd Chances are rare Gifts...

The last couple of days Andreea and I have been with Joshua have been extremely rewarding and special for me as a "big brother", everyday there are recognizable improvements. Monday morning I asked him to write his name on a piece of paper, it looked like scribble marks. But by that afternoon he was writing clear enough that I could read it. We played a few rounds of Tic-Tac-Toe and by the 4th or 5th game his X's were looking real good. I wrote down different names and words randomly and asked him to circle the ones I said and he found each on the page. He has given us some great one liners too. He is making some major strides but there is lots of work ahead for him and everyone else in his life, we have all been very fortunate that God has granted Joshua his recovering health. Although his life and ours will never be the same, he and everyone of us have been truly blessed with this second chance, as such we must learn appreciate such gifts.

The entire family thanks all of you for your continued prayers and encouragement.

P.S. thanks for dealing with my occasional poor grammar and spelling mistakes :)

Update - Day 16 - 9:41PM

Today was a busy day for Joshua.

  • In the morning Joshua had a session with his Physical Therapist, she had him get out of bed and stand up for a few seconds with help of cource. Afterwards she told us to keep him awake, which was very hard since he was tried after that.
  • Good thing we didn't let him sleep because around lunch time the Speech Therapist came and had him chew on ice chips to see how he swallowed, she seemed happy, and tomorrow in the morning he will eat a few spoons of baby food mixed with barium. The barium will show up on X-rays to verify that the food is going to the proper places AKA Stomach. If everything comes back good then Joshua can start to eat and drink normally (not normal food, but through normal means), no more feeding tube. Which by the way he pulled out again this morning at around 5:30AM, it was quickly put back, and stayed there all day. We have to watch him oh so carefully, he tries to sneak his right hand to grab it all day long. :) The doctor said this normal behavior in brain injury patiance.
  • He worked with the Occupational Therapist in the afternoon, who played catch (Nerf ball) with Joshua and worked with Joshua's left arm. He is doing well with his right arm and leg. Joshua has still not regained much strength or control of the left side yet, but each day there are slight improvements.
  • Tonight the duty nurse allowed Mom to stay in the hospital over night with Josh, so she is keeping a vigilant eye on Joshua and his feeding tube (NG).

Sunday, December 12, 2004

Update - Day 15 - 8:55PM

  • Joshua had a good morning session with his Physical Therapist today, the Therapist got him to get out of bed and stand up for a few seconds. Afterwards he was very tired and slept until around 3:00PM.
  • He was very alert for the rest of the afternoon, his speech is getting better or we are getting better at understanding him, either way we are happy! :) He says "I want to go home" very well.
  • Hopefully tomorrow when he is evaluated by the Speech Therapist, the prognoses will be that he can safely start to swallow. If this is the case then Joshua, can start to eat and drink normally, no feeding tube.
  • Tonight when we left the hospital we put a boxing glove on his right hand, we bought it this morning under doctors recommendation. He said that the glove would make it harder to pull out the feeding tube or anything else during the night when we are not around to watch him.
  • His feeding tube was put in early this morning and stayed in all day, lets hope it is still there in the morning when we are allowed back in.
  • He still ran a fever through out day, and it is being monitored.
  • By the end of the week we hope to be able transfer him to a Rehab center.

Saturday, December 11, 2004

Update - Day 14 - 10:05PM

  • Guess what? Joshua pulled out his feeding tube again last night.
  • Today he was alert almost all day, he is getting very good at playing catch with his right hand. He also likes to snap his fingers and point.
  • His temperature came down today, though he seems to be get agitated that he is stuck in bed all day.
  • He still is not tallking much but he can nod his head to signal "yes" and "no" very well now.

Friday, December 10, 2004

Update - Day 13 - 7:06PM

  • Well Joshua managed to pull out his feeding tube again last night, seems whatever he can get his hands on to he grabs and does not want to let go.
  • Today he was alert almost all day most all day, he worked with both a physical therapist and speech therapist.
  • The speech therapist is evaluating Joshua's ability to swallow, if he can correctly and safely swallow they will be able to start feeding him normal. That would be really good as the feeding tube that he is currently using goes through one of his nostrals and is very unconfortable (probibly why he keeps pulling it out.) Also that type can only be used for a short time (few weeks) if he needs to use a feeding tube for longer than that then that would require a surgery. (PEG)

Thursday, December 09, 2004

Update - Day 12 - 2:35PM

  • Joshua is still running a temperature, and has been given some medication (good old fashioned Tylenol) to help reduce it.
  • His sedation medications has been reduced a lot today and he was alert this morning and worked with a physical therapist. He is now sleeping.
  • Very Early this morning Joshua was moved to the "Progressive Care" wing of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from "Critical Care", this another good sign that Joshua's health is improving. Soon he will need to be transferred to a Rehabilitation Center on his road to recovery.
  • We have started searching for a Acute Rehabilitation Center were he can get the specialized care he needs to recuperate from his injuries. Particularly one who specializes in brain damage and brain retraining.

We are all very thankful that Joshua is doing sooo much better. With time we believe in our hearts that he will only continue to improve. Throught your prayers and ours, God has graced Joshua with this progress.

Wednesday, December 08, 2004

Update - Day 11 - 4:53PM

  • Today was tough on Joshua, during the night he managed to pull out his feeding tube, and his sedation medication was increased.
  • He has been running a high fever most of the day.
  • During his evaluation yesterday, the Doctors told us that Joshua has sustained damage primarily to the right side of his brain. The injury was likened to that of a stroke victim. It will require Joshua to have both physical and brain rehabilitation. His brain will have to be trained to use other areas to do some of the things the injured areas had done in the past. This is why there is very little movement in his left arm and foot. (right-side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa)
  • On a positive note Joshua's CAT scan came back and the Doctors have elected not to place a Ventricular shunt, so the liquids that where collecting in apart of the brain now seem to be draining properly. Also the ventricular catheter that was placed in the top of Joshua's head was removed this morning. The ventricular catheter had been connected to an external strain gauge to monitor the intracranial pressure and to allow for therapeutic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. The pressure in Joshua's head rose in the immediately days following the injury and need to be both monitored closely by the doctors. Draining some of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surounds the brain can sometimes help to relief some of the pressure being put on the brain.

Update - Day 10 - 11:06PM

  • Joshua had a good day today, he rested/slept most of the time, and had a little over an hour of consciousness, he interacted quite a bit with Jennifer, Mom, and Dad during that hour. He is a bit overwhelmed with the new environment that he is waking up to.
  • Today's CAT Scan has not been evaluated yet.

Important Note on Visiting Joshua: We appreciate all the visitors who have come far and wide to see Joshua, and thank the Antelope Valley Hospital staff for being very kind in allowing the many visitors in for Joshua up to this point. But now as Joshua starts to regaining consciousness it is important to limit visitors to avoid overwhelming and confusing Joshua during this period of recovery, so for the time being Joshua's visitors are being limited to immediate family members only. We hope to allow more visitors later when Joshua is able to leave Critical Care Unit. Your understanding and patience is appreciated.

*On behalf of the Meneses Family: Our heavy hearts and prayers are extended to the families of Heduino Brasil and Manuel Silva of Tulare, both of whom passed away in a car accident yesterday afternoon.

Update - Day 10 - 4:04PM

  • Just got a call from my sister Jennifer, who has been with Joshua all morning, and she said he woke up an hour ago. He has been very alert and even talked a little. Joshua told her he was thirsty and that he knew who she is. More details to follow this evening...

Update - Day 10 - 1:18PM

  • During the night, the nurses and monitoring equipment detected a irregular heartbeat. Today it has been normal but a Cardiologist is coming to evaluate Joshua. He told the family not to become overly concerned as this is quite common in accidents like this.
  • Joshua is going in for another CAT Scan today.
  • Joshua is resting heavily again today, which is needed for his body to continue the healing process.

Monday, December 06, 2004

Update - Day 9 - 7:36PM

  • Today a speech therapist came to visit Joshua twice today to evaluate his reflexes, but during both visits Joshua would not wake up. The speech therapist will return tomorrow and hopefully be able to evaluate Josh.

Update - Day 9 - 12:14PM

  • Joshua was stable through the night.
  • The results of his CAT scan showed that in his brain there are some areas were the liquids the swelling caused is draining very slowly. In a few days if they are not draining properly the doctors may need to place a small drainage tube in Joshua's head -- a Ventricular shunt.
  • A physical therapist came to see Joshua today, he has given the family direction on activities we need to do with Joshua in his present state. The activities are to avoid more stiffness in his arms and legs, especially on his weaker left side. Bending his arms and legs, and stretching will help keep his range of motion. Also last night Jennifer and Dad went out looking for some high top sneakers for Josh for him to wear in bed, this will help him keep his foot in a 90 degree position.
  • Also Joshua has been given a little stress ball to keep it in his right hand; he seems to have a lot energy and strength in that hand. The nurses have had to keep it restrained so he doesn’t grab any tubes or equipment. :)
  • He is still mostly sleeping, with occasional moments of excitement and consciousness.

Update - Day 9 - 1:44AM

  • Joshua went in for a CAT scan an hour ago, and will be evaluated by battery of doctors during the morning hours. It will likely be this afternoon before the family will have any results to share, as soon as we do I will post it to this site.
  • Sunday's chest X-rays showed improvement in his lungs, and signs that the pneumonia is regressing.

Sunday, December 05, 2004

Update - Day 8 - 1:30PM

  • Joshua stayed stable over the night. He appears much more rested this morning.
  • The doctors are still monitoring his lungs very carefully, and the need rest seems to be helping a lot.
  • He has been sleeping all morning and is very peaceful and tranquil, he is sleeping so soundly that some times you can even hear him snore. :)
  • The nurses have to wake him up periodically do some breath treatments and to force him to cough. Afterwards he falls right back into a sound sleep.
  • If the pressure inside Joshua's skull stays stable, in a few days the doctors are hoping to remove the tube that was placed in the top of his head the day of the accident. They have clamped it off for almost a day now.
  • Several people have asked when Joshua will be able to leave the hospital, this a long road of recovery and rehabilitation. At this point there is still no specific time line for when Joshua will be able to move out of the Critical Care Unit (CCU), into the regular hospital population. He has made major improvements but his condition is still very serious and it will need to taken one day at a time. Also due to the type of and severity of his injuries when he is finally able to leave he will need to have rehabilitative treatment.

Week 1 - Thoughts

Joshua has improved so much since last Sunday, that it has been a true "miracle". In a week he has gone from a prognoses that none of us were ready to accept to feeling all of our hearts with such great hope. We are all sooo truly thankful for the gifts of improvements God has given Joshua and all of us. To all of you we are thankful for the support, prayers, and thoughts of hope that you have given Joshua and the family.

Joshua we all love you so much! Keep up the good work everyone is pulling for your full recovery.

Update - Day 7 - 1:30PM

  • Joshua stayed stable over the night.
  • The doctor says he needs to get much rest, so his lungs can heal and body can heal.
  • He occasionally tries to talk, but between his sore vocal cords and all the sedatives it is hard to understand what he is trying to say.
  • They reduced the sedative medication to half, but he was moving around too much and his blood pressure started to rise, so the doctors decided to return it the previous amount.
  • We have been asked to not stimulate him too much until his body has more time to heal. This is a crucial time for the healing of his lungs.
  • He is moving his right arm around a lot, but is still not able to do much on the left
  • Thank you for all your continued prayers.
  • Also the doctors have asked us to limit the amount of visitors for the time being, as Joshua get excided when he is visited and it is slowing his healing.

Friday, December 03, 2004

Update - Day 6 - 1:30PM

  • Joshua said a few words to Dad and the nurse, he was able to say where he was feeling pain.
  • When Dad asked him "Can you see me?", he replyed "yes."
  • They increased his medication so he is sleeping again.

Update - Day 6 - 12:30PM

  • Great News: Joshua was taken off the ventilator just a few hours ago and is breathing on his own. He occasionally coughs which is a good sign! :)
  • The family has been told to "sit quietly" and not stimulate him today, as his body needs to get used to breathing on its own.
  • He is opening his eyes, but does not seem to track objects or people yet. He is still very heavily sedated.

Joshua's Guestbook

We just want to thank everyone for their continued prayers and thoughts. It is helping Joshua get through this.

Also wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the kind heart felt words they have left for Joshua in his guestbook, there is some really amazing stuff in there. I know he will appreciate it when he gets better.

Thursday, December 02, 2004

Update - Day 5 - 7:30PM

  • Joshua's condition stayed about the same today.
  • He is still running a fever, and the doctors and nurses are doing their best to keep him cool and as comfortable as possible.
  • Dad was able to get him to squeeze his hand just before the end of visiting hours.
  • Keep praying :)

Update - Day 5 - 10:30AM

  • During the night Joshua was opening his eyes, and his eyes dilating. The nurse said it is not likely that he can see or focus on anything at this point. But the reaction of his iris is another good sign.
  • The nurse was washing him last night and he was fidgeting with his right arm so she gave him a wet towel to hold, which it seems he did not like because he tossed it :) She then gave him a dry towel and he held onto it.
  • This morning they increased the sudation medication because when he moves around it makes his lungs work harder than the Doctors want. Right now they want to give his lungs every chance to heal without any unnecessary strain.

Wednesday, December 01, 2004

Update - Day 4 - 10:40PM

  • Mom just got off the phone with the Critical Care nurse and she had some more good feedback. She asked Josh to wiggle his left toes, then his right toes, squeeze his left hand, then his right hand, and he was able to respond to all those voice commands. More positive news. Thank God.

Update - Day 4 - 2:40PM

  • Joshua's CAT Scan results were very positive, the Neurologist feels confident that Joshua will be able to make a full recovery over a long period of time. The family is overjoyed by this news and thanks everyone for their well wishes, kind words, and prayers.
  • He is still very heavily sedated to keep him still while still on the ventilator.
  • All good news and we pray and hope it continues.

Update - Day 4 - 6:40AM

  • Very late last night after visiting hours the Nurses removed the cervical collar from around Joshua's neck. It had been there since he first received medical attention. This is a good sign as it means there is less concern from the Doctors of spine and neck injury.
  • During this process Joshua was less sedated and according to the nurse was able to hear her voice commands. When she asked him to squeeze her hand he was able to do that with his right hand, not yet on his left.
  • He still has a fever and there is concern over it, the Doctors are working to find and treat the cause.
  • There is still plans to do CAT Scan today, I will update when possible.

Update - Day 3 - 10:00AM

  • Joshua's vital signs stayed stable over the night.
  • His fever has reduced.
  • He is still in what the doctors are calling a drug-induced coma, this is done to keep him from putting any more pressure or force on his brain which has swelled due to the truma.
  • This morning's X-Rays of his lungs show improvement.
  • Tomorrow a CAT Scan will be done to better assess Joshua's brain.
  • The major concern right now it the several hours between the time of the accident and when Joshua received medical attention. During that time is unknown if his brain was deprived of oxygen, we can only hope and pray that his heart and lungs fought hard to push oxygen to the brain.
